Gas stations are 2.9 times more likely to be giving away more fuel than withholding it
This startling statistic emanates from recent records from the Illinois Department of Agriculture which show that 41.1% of Illinois gas stations had at least one pump line that failed an inspection in 2022. A total of 7,873 gas pump lines failed statewide, representing 7% of the total (113,644).
As the Daily Herald article points out, Inspection failures can be caused by giving out too much or too little fuel, usually the result of mechanical issues that cause the meter to “creep” or “jump,” even when it’s not being used.
While it can cause consumers to pay for fuel that wasn’t dispensed, state records show that it’s actually more common for pumps to dispense more fuel than less.
Additionally, if a pump fails inspection, it will be taken out of service until the maintenance is performed to recalibrate the device. Not only does this have an impact on sales, but it also affects the customer experience.
How can C-store owners avoid this issue and ensure all sites have high performing pumps?
Our Meter Drift tool in iHUB detects variance from drifting meters by product and fueling position, and allocate the percentage of loss, helping fuel retailers prevent giving away fuel and optimize sales. It also ensures compliance with meters operating within legal thresholds and helps manage the maintenance expenses better when it comes to pump checks.
Key benefits include :
- Understand variance caused by meters – which dispensers are running long and short
- Stay in compliance
- Optimise sales
- Optimal maintenance spend by determining when it is more cost effective to adjust rather than replace the meter. How many gallons are you selling before the loss is greater than the repair?
- Protect the customer experience
